Same feeling

It’s a title that sounds like something from a romance blog, but the category is all about the craftsman’s spirit (^_^)b. In this world, there are plenty of things that don’t need to be said, but there are also many things that become hard to bear if left unsaid. Not saying what you know can feel quite uncomfortable. We often don’t express thoughts like, ‘Ah, it would be better if you did it this way,’ to others. It’s more common to share such thoughts when asked, ‘What do you think?’

But I’m the kind of person who tends to say it out loud… I’ve even been told that I’m being a bit too meddlesome. Craftsmen, especially those who work with blades, often don’t readily reveal their techniques. Naturally, because sharing those techniques would mean giving away their experience and skills for free. It’s like if a chef were to openly share their secret recipe they came up with themselves… That sort of feeling.

However, I’ve encountered a craftsman who speaks openly about their techniques. It’s because they’re from Suisin, that they feel comfortable doing so. Even then, there’s a sense of ‘Should I really be saying this much?!’ They shared with me right up until that point. At first, this craftsman hesitated to share, but on the way back from Suisin and when they returned to their workshop, they couldn’t shake the discomfort and decided to give me a call.

Starting with, ‘It might be a bit much, but…’ they went on to say, ‘Whether you choose to follow through on it or not is up to Suisin. I leave it in your hands,’ and even added, ‘I feel much better after saying it. It’s a relief!’ And then, almost under their breath, they murmured, ‘It’s because it’s Suisin… I might not have said anything if it were someone else.’ Hearing that made me genuinely happy.

Being surrounded by skilled craftsmen is a source of happiness. For the sake of these craftsmen, I believe it’s important to continue selling honest and high-quality knives. That’s what I’ve been thinking lately.
