light bulbs and fluorescent lights
What I think would be handy for sharpening knives is a lightbulb! Specifically, an incandescent bulb? You know, like one of those naked bulbs.
Generally, overshadowed by fluorescent lights, these bulbs are becoming less common, but for fine tasks like knife sharpening, this lightbulb does a great job.
In the craftsman’s workshop, there’s always this light bulb in places where delicate work is done. (Just to be clear, there are exceptions, so keep that in mind!) Things that might not be visible under fluorescent lights start to show up under incandescent bulbs! They’re perfect for examining any distortions, cracks, or the general condition of a blade. Maybe it’s because they’re closer to sunlight? I’m not really knowledgeable about light, but for those who are, it might be interesting to delve into the principles behind it. On the other hand, straight fluorescent lights are great for inspecting the surface of a knife! They reveal all the subtle bumps and curves.
