Paper with a Japanese sword…?

It doesn’t seem like dropping a piece of paper on the sword would make it cut! When the blade sharpener visited, I inquired, ‘I’m just curious, but…,’ and the craftsman promptly responded with a chuckle, ‘It won’t cut.’ He went on to explain, ‘No matter how sharp a Japanese sword is, it won’t easily cut a piece of paper dropped like that! Besides, Japanese swords won’t demonstrate their true sharpness unless handled properly.’ He even quipped, ‘If a Japanese sword could do that, a kitchen knife should cut even better!’ That was quite amusing (^^;

The craftsman continued, ‘If it were to cut, maybe, just maybe, tilting the sword and letting the paper slide down might do the trick, but it would still be quite challenging,” he added jokingly. That was the impression (^0^ If I ever find myself with some extra time, I might take on the challenge without giving up, haha. I’ll sharpen it with Hayate to make it practically sharp and then try letting the paper slide diagonally!
