Vintage Deba – Blue 2 Steel

We have crafted a well-balanced vintage Deba according to the customer’s request, ensuring a tight fit and adjusting the back bevel for the small edge.

This Deba was forged by a young Togashi-san. It is in an excellent condition, free from any distortions or irregularities commonly found in older knives. It is truly remarkable to see it in such a pristine state. During this era, I believe that blade sharpeners primarily used natural water stones, which would have minimally impacted the blade with excess heat. It is likely that the steel is in its optimal state.

The photo may not clearly show it, but there is a noticeable presence of “hagane” (blade material) left on the knife.
Perhaps this is the result of sharpening with a low abrasive power natural sharpening stone.

The backside of the blade also hits with a solid ‘bash!’ There are areas that don’t make contact on the opposite side of the tip’s curve (the ridge side), but this is the escape route for the backside of the blade! Rather than directing the force towards the tip, it is better to guide it towards the ridge side, maximizing the blade’s effectiveness as a tool. At least, that’s what I believe!

Note: The grind on the backside of the blade is thinner than usual for a deba knife. Be cautious when attempting to replicate it, as it may lead to chipping. It’s better to widen it!

Now, what about the edge? It goes without saying that it feels incredibly good. While blue steel may sometimes have a slightly softer feeling, this knife has a crisp ‘katsun!’ sensation. However, when placed on a sharpening stone, it exhibits the characteristic smoothness and adhesion of blue steel.

Even with finer grit stones and adding an ‘itohiki’ finish, it maintains the ‘katsun!’ sensation, making it one of the knives I don’t want to sell. It emphasizes the sharpness inherent in the steel, rather than just thinness.

The knives being produced right now also have many great qualities. And the older ones have their own unique appeal.

Without actually using them, it’s hard to know the whole truth. But at the point of shipment, I believe this knife will do an outstanding job.
